I was looking at this this lady's latest blog post and was interested to read her query as to the correct noun to use when referring to someone who sews. Funnily enough, I had this same quandary a day or two ago when listing a new notepad for sale:
Is this suitable for a sewer (ratty, smelly-sounding word!) or a sewist (quite like this one!!)??
Which should it be? Answers on a postcard please!!

Difficult one this Debbie - sewer is great when spoken but not so good when you see it written (the ratty/smelly issue) but looking on the web folk don't seem too keen on sewist either (catch 22). 'Sewist' also seems to refer to a Janome model of machine. Looks like there will be issues which ever you pick.

I agree neither word sounds quite right. Does 'seamstress' only apply to someone who makes/alters clothes? I guess it may sound a bit old fashioned but in an appealing "House of Elliott" kind of way. What do you think?

I suppose you could use 'stitcher' i.e. "Stitcher's notebook".

Ha !! Dilemma-hmmm yes i would steer away from sewers(eeeww!!) and go with "stitcher" or "sewing themed" whatever you call them they are lovely :) xx
